Environmental Horticulture

Dr. Bart Schutzman

Bart completed his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees here at UF, studying the systematics of Mesoamerican Zamia (Zamiaceae, Cycadales) using morphometric analysis and then-current numerical taxonomic approaches in addition to traditional fieldwork, herbarium taxonomy, morphological and anatomical studies. Since his graduation, he has been the I.T. specialist for the Environmental Horticulture Department, and served for more than 13 years as publication director of the Cycad Society, recreating its newsletter as a color quarterly in 2002.

His current focus is on the restructuring of the department’s plant identification course, to which he has added online lectures to go along with the live laboratory. He has begun the addition of many teaching plants to the Fifield Hall and greenhouse complex’s landscapes, and is in the process of designing and implementing new plant signage, thanks to a grant from the Florida Nursery, Growers and Landscape Association (FNGLA).  To complement his new lecture videos for plant identification, he is also putting together additional modules that will focus on important and well-marked horticultural plant groups.
